This USB to RS232 serial adapter is identical to our XS8801 with the exception of two things: this adapter has stand-off nuts on each side of the DB9 connector instead of thumb-screws, and the shape of the housing is a bit different than the XS8801; otherwise the circuitry and architecture of this adapter is identical to the XS8801.
So, here are the the highlights of this USB to serial adapter:
High performance processor
This USB to serial adapter is designed around the FT232RL processor from FTDI, a British family owned semiconductor company established in 1990 with distributors in more than 50 countries. The FT232RL processor is superior to most USB to serial processors in the market in regards to performance and price. Not only is it a very well designed and solid processor with many features, it also has well written royalty free drivers which are updated frequently.
Compatible with most operating systems
One of the reasons we use the FT232RL processor in this USB to serial adapter is that the drivers are updated frequently which means that this adapter is fully compatible with most operating systems; even before a new version of a particular operation system is released. It will work with all newer versions of Windows, Linux and Mac. The drivers for Windows are WHQL certified of course.
Advanced functions
All port settings will automatically adjust to your serial device, however multiple port settings can also be manually adjusted. Manually adjustable settings are parameters such as latency timer, COM port number, buffer size and timeouts, just to mention a few. These settings are very nice to have if you need to tweak certain parameters to get a specific application working.
After installing the drivers the virtual COM port will appear in your computer's Device Manager. This COM port can be used almost as if it was a standard built-in COM port.
Overall solid design
A few advantageous design features:
- A ferrite core built into the cable next to the USB connector prevents high frequency noise to interfere with the data transmission.
- Highly flexible cable prevents the wires from braking causing loose connections and communication errors.
- Transparent housing with thumbscrews and indication LED lights indicating when data is sent and received, which is a nice feature to have when troubleshooting problems.
- Matching serial driver chip from Zywyn. The serial driver chip we use is well designed and matches the overall circuitry which ensures proper RS232 communication without errors.
Electrostatic protection
Protection against static electricity and surges of up to 15KV gives you reliable data transfers and protects the converter and your equipment from damage due to over voltages.
The conclusion
The above mentioned facts are reasons for less headache for the user. With most low-cost adapters you will often experience some kind of installation or communication problems such as driver installation problems, computer freeze, virtual COM port problems or simply just some unexplainable error messages from the operating system. This is not the case with this adapter! Due to its excellent processor and overall well designed circuitry this adapter will not cause computer freezes, unexplainable errors or other installation or user problems. Furthermore this adapter is compatible with most serial devices both new and legacy.
