The UCW232C is a good all-round Serial to WiFi adapter which will allow you to connect a serial RS232 device to a computer over a standard wireless network (802.11 b/g); alternatively it can be configured to communicate in pairs allowing two serial RS232 devices to directly communicate together without using a computer.
Basic and Advanced Functions
This serial WiFi adapter is designed around a Broadcom BCM4390 processor which offers all commonly used basic functions such as managing the adapter over WiFi or through the serial port, virtual COM port creation (VCOM software is included), multiple protocol support, AP / infrastructure mode and security measures. It also offers multiple advanced settings and functions.
Creating a COM port
The virtual COM port software included with this adapter will create a virtual COM port in Windows Device Manager which can be used as if it was a standard built-in COM port, however with certain limitations. The virtual COM port software is compatible with Windows 7 (32/64-bit), Vista (32/64-bit), XP and 2000; alternatively several versions of 3rd party virtual COM software has been successfully tested with this adapter.
Another way of connecting to the adapter is over a direct TCP socket which does not require any virtual COM software.
Security
These days network security is an important aspect of setting up a wireless network which is why this serial WiFi adapter will work with WPA TKIP, WPA AES, WPA2 TKIP and WPS2 AES security algorithms.
Powering the Adapter
The adapter can be powered by the included USB cable; alternatively a standard mini USB 110VAC/5VDC power supply adapter can also be used. If you need a battery to power the adapter then we recommend an external USB battery power pack.
As mentioned above this adapter has many more functions as described here so please refer to the datasheet and setup guide for detailed information.
