RS232 to RS485 and RS232 to RS422 Converters Generally

Serial RS232 to RS485 and RS232 to RS422 converters are mainly used in commercial or industrial applications to communicate data between a computer and a serial device such as process machinery, PLC's, laboratory equipment, a printer or any other device with a serial port.

Even the serial protocol which was introduced in 1962 is now an older protocol it is still used in many new devices and applications, however mainly in commercial and industrial applications. The reason the protocol is still being used a lot is because it is a very reliable and fairly simple protocol so it is relatively easy for system engineers to integrate it into their designs, both in regards to hardware and software.

What is the difference between RS485 and RS422?

There are many differences between RS485 and RS422 however the most important differences for a user to keep in mind is that RS485 is ideal for network configurations such as a bus network due to its ability to setup a master which can communicate with multiple slaves. This is also called point to multi-point communication.
RS422 on the other hand is ideal for extending communication between two serial devices, similar to a standard extension cable. This is also called point to point communication.

Another difference between RS485 and RS422 is that RS485 is half-duplex which means that it can send and receive data however not both at the same time. If its sending then the receive wire is disabled and if it is receiving then the transmitting wire is disabled. Therefore RS485 also only requires 2 wires (or 2 wires and one ground wire) to communicate.
RS422 is full-duplex which means that it can send and receive data at the same time. To do this a RS422 converter requires 4 wires to communicate.
