For successful serial communication in industrial environments such as factory automation, oilfield / offshore applications or similar heavy duty harsh environments we highly recommend using a fully optically isolated converter such as the XS503.
The XS503 has full optical isolation between the RS232 interface and the RS485 / RS422 interfaces which means that no electrical voltage is actually transferred between the interfaces; data transfer is instead done by light emitting diodes (also referred to as opto-couplers). Optical isolation in combination with Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) effectively isolates and protects your serial device, computer and data communication from damaging surges, voltage spikes, ground loops and static electricity for up to 2500Vrms/600W and 15KV EDS protection for each data line. Furthermore the power supply is galvanic separated from the internal circuitry which gives additional protection.
This converter is made of hardend ABS plastic and has a built-in DIN mount bracket which makes it easy to install it on a standard DIN rail. Alternatively the converter can be mounted by screws by using the two screw mounting holes. Connecting the RS485 / RS422 wires is done by the included screw terminal header. RS232 is connected by a standard DB9 connector.
LED indication lights for the TX and RX signals indicates when data is transmitted or received, which is nice to have when troubleshooting.
This RS232 to RS485 / RS422 converter is build around the reliable and high performance SP202E line driver from Exar. Optical isolation is achieved with high speed 6N137 isolation opto-couplers from Fairchild Semiconductors.
A 4-feet male/female serial cable is included with each converter.
